Leadership Development

We are reshaping leadership development to equip lay and ordained leaders to respond to a changing world with Christ-centered faith, courage and renewed vision. Through practical, biblically rooted training for leaders at every stage, we help support churches grow in gospel confidence and missional impact by cultivating healthy leadership cultures.

Using a blend of online and on-site sessions, alongside workshops, coaching and tailored learning pathways, we partner with churches to shape training around their context and calling.

With 38 years of ordained ministry experience, James is our lead researcher and content creator. He is author of multiple books and courses, including the best-seller Growing Leaders and the Growing Leaders course that has helped develop over 10,000 leaders. An engaging and dynamic communicator, he established the highly respected Arrow Leadership Programme in 1998. Twenty-six years on it continues to facilitate leadership excellence and missional engagement within the Church of England. With a commitment to excellence, he is passionate about resourcing the local church to be well led and mission focused, is a semi-professional photographer, and loves ironing!

Matt Hogg

Leadership Enabler
E: mhogg@cpas.org.uk

Matt Hogg is a Leadership Enabler at CPAS with 18 years of ordained ministry and 11 years’ experience planting and leading a church in West London. He hosts the Lead On Live webinar series, curates the Lead On newsletter, and leads a national project resourcing and developing leaders under 40, helping them discern calling, grow in confidence, and lead well in a rapidly changing context. His approach is shaped by over two decades of practical ministry and leadership experience. Alongside his CPAS role, Matt is the founder of the charity Stronger Network and has a lifelong passion for entomology, including a professional role at the Natural History Museum (ask him about tiger beetles!).

Rev Sarah Pix

Leadership Enabler
E: spix@cpas.org.uk

Sarah is an experienced church leader with nearly twenty-one years of ordained ministry. She served her curacy in an Urban Priority Area before moving to Dorset for incumbency. Moving into the role of Team Rector, she became one of three women leading larger churches nationally at the time, and gained Multi-parish experience. An alumni of the Strategic Leadership Development Programme, she was instrumental in planting a weekly all-age congregation and pioneering outreach in the town. She is passionate about Church as the family of God and seeing people come to faith and be restored by Jesus. In her work with CPAS, she has developed a specialism in helping clergy inhabit roles with greater oversight.

Before ordination, she worked at Kew Gardens and loves plants and walking in woods and by rivers with her springer spaniels.

Rev Canon Simon Taylor

Leadership Enabler
E: staylor@cpas.org.uk

Simon Taylor is a senior church leader with over 25 years’ experience in Christian ministry, focused on discipleship, strategy, systems leadership, change management, and parish renewal across dioceses and parishes. He is trusted to lead churches and leaders through change in service of Christian mission and growth, including urban-estate turnaround, pastoral reorganisation, and deanery strategy. He works across churches of differing traditions, from urban estates to rural settings, develops and delivers national training in leadership and evangelism, oversees coaching, and leads parish review across the Church of England. A double alumnus of the Windsor Leadership Programme, he clears his head on a mountain bike.

Anna Shaw

School Ministry Development Officer
E: ashaw@cpas.org.uk

Anna brings specialist insight into ministry and outreach with children and young people, with particular passion and expertise in education. Her work is shaped by more than 20 years of teaching experience and involvement in children’s and youth ministry. Alongside her part‑time role with CPAS, Anna continues to teach in schools, research church–school partnerships, and lead a variety of school‑ and church‑based children’s and youth initiatives. She also coaches and mentors other leaders in this field. Anna serves her Diocese through the Board of Education and Bishop’s Council—and by supporting her vicar husband. Outside of work, she loves running, most often after frisbees: she coaches an Ultimate Frisbee club at her local secondary school.
