Oversight Ministry
Helping church leaders lead with greater oversight.
Many church leaders are finding that their roles are changing and involve more in the way of oversight.
Whether you are a Team Rector of a multi-parish benefice, an Area Dean or leading a large church with a staff team, there are oversight skills and tools that you can grow, to help you lead in a way that is sustainable, strategic and missional.
The next Oversight Ministry course starts September 2026
Equip leaders to understand change, recognise their gifts, develop new oversight skills, grow others, shape sustainable vision, and lead culture change across multiple congregations.
Run by Dioceses for their clergy, but we are planning an online course starting in the autumn
Through the course you will:
Gain an understanding of changes
Gain an understanding of the changes in church, society and clergy role that require a different leadership approach. We will look at the positive and negative drivers for change and the adaptations required to lead in the world we inhabit.
Be able to identify the gifts and skills
Be able to identify the gifts and skills you contribute to leading in oversight. We will see that all leaders have some oversight experience, and dig into the repository of Christian leadership practice that stretches down the ages and across the globe.
Begin to practice new skills
Begin to practice new skills and recognise how your priorities will change as you move towards an oversight model. We will assess how you currently use your time, and where your priorities need adjustment in order for leading in a multi-parish setting to be sustainable and life-giving.
Learn how to identify, grow and release other leaders
Learn how to identify, grow and release other leaders. One of the most pressing issues for many leaders, we will take you through some steps to grow leaders, using the example of Jesus.
Formulate an action plan
You will begin by developing a structured approach for discerning vision within your oversight area, identifying key priorities and the direction God may be leading. From there, you will outline practical steps that help translate that vision into meaningful action. Throughout this process, we will equip you with reliable, hands-on tools that support good organisation, follow-through, and getting things done well.
Appreciate the culture change required
Recognise the culture change needed for effective oversight ministry, for yourself, your benefices, and your leadership teams. Leading multiple congregations sustainably demands a significant mindset shift. We will offer a culture‑change model you can apply in your own context.
Recognise and reflect on the challenges
Recognise and reflect on the challenges, opportunities and losses of embracing an oversight model. All change will inevitably lead to new challenges to be faced, new opportunities to be embraced, and losses to be grieved. We will take time to consider what these may be for us, and for those that we lead.
Learn about the particular stressors
Learn about the particular stressors in oversight ministry and be equipped with tools to manage them. You will be offered ways of building resilience into your life and ministry.
This course is for leaders who are:
